Project Ideas & Plan

Name: Nikodem Trzcinowicz
Major Project Title: Body: Released
Progression Route: Photography & Video BA

Describe your major project objective using the SMART acronym:

For this photography project, I will be exploring and depicting different aspects of human life. This project will show the people's mortality, and will delve into different aspects of it through a series of six black and white photographs. Each photo will be created using different photography techniques, either in-camera, or a digital one.  During this process I will be further developing my black and white photography skills, long shutter photography, multiple exposure photography, as well as I will continue to advance my compositing in photoshop techniques.

The above mentioned six photographs will show aspects of life, that makes us human, like ageing (multiple exposure portrait), memories (picture in picture compositing), dreaming (compositing) or visualizing a rush of thoughts (long exposure portrait).

The entire process, ranging from research, through production to post production will take me around six weeks, and will be presented in a form of gallery on my website.

Why have you chosen to do this project?

I am deeply interested in recreating my thoughts through visual mediums. Portraying how I am perceive individual parts of life is an interesting creative challenge which can also help me in developing my personal style in photography.

Who are you researching for this project? Please list at least three artists and/or designers and your additional research on your concept.

As for now I have in plan researching three artists - filmmaker Ingmar Bergman, and two photographers Man Ray and Claude Cahun. I will be also looking into ways of portraying individual aspects of life through expressionistic paintings.

What techniques/skills are you developing/learning for this project?

Besides further development in department of photo compositing and overall editing, I will focus on improving my camera techniques and skills, so I am less dependent on photo editing softwares and more on my manual abilities.

What do you expect the final outcome of the project to be?

I expect to produce six high quality, in regards of editing, composition, lighting and message, photos presented in one style as a one complete photography series.

What have you completed so far for this project?

I have drawn first sketches of the scenes I want to portray, and shot test long exposure self portrait in order to set the visual direction of my project. I have also done an early look into artists I want to research during the following weeks.

What do you think will be the issues/drawbacks to the project?

A portion of this project I will be shooting on new camera, therefore ar first I might have a problem with being fluent with all of the functions. I do not think that I will be having too many problems in regards to photo editing and compositing, since I have spend a lot of time on it last term, however I think that all of the in-camera techniques might turn out more difficult then I anticipate. This is also first project I am presenting in black and white, so it might be a problem, knowing that I do not have a whole spectrum of colours in my disposition.

What is your time scale considering that this has to be completed by week ten?

Week 3:

Early research into artists, create project plan, so it is ready for sign-off.

Week 4:

Further research into visual style of Man Ray.

Week 5:

Further research into German Expressionism in film and photography of Claude Cahun.

Week 6:

Creating more specific sketches, shooting test shots and researching ways of portraying aspects of life.

Week 7:

Pre-Production (location scouting, selecting clothing, and gathering helpful appliances) and production (shooting)

Week 8:

Continuing production (if not finished in week 7) and post-production (Editing)

Week 9:

Adding everything on the website, and writing reflections about entire project.

What resources or materials will you need for this project?

Sony alpha a7r II (with 50mm F1.8) for portraits
Panasonic G7 (with 14-42 F3.5-5.6) for wider shots
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Lightroom
Tripod
LED lights

Draw a picture/Write a sentence/sketch a story/write a dialogue that captures the essence of your project.

Harnessing the individuality of ways that people are experiencing life.

Comments

  1. Good work - however you have only one week where you are shooting - I think it may be a good idea to have a contingency ere as you may need to reshoot. Also prior to that week I would expect you would need to take lots of test shots just to see if this works
