Odilon Redon - reflections after lecture
During last session we were listening to a lecture about French artist - Odilon Redon.
His story can be very inspiring to aspiring artists. While now Redon is mostly known for his lithographs, he was not recognized until he was 38 years old. Now everyone wants to be famous and have a world wide recognition the moment they start creating. It is a very unhealthy way of thinking and understanding that success need an enormous amount of time, energy and hard work is a first step in the right direction.
As for me, the most stunning aspect of his work is the way he uses darkness and blackness in his artworks. It really separates the main subjects of the image from the rest. I also creates a certain atmosphere that is sort of unreal, and symbolical.
“Black is the most essential of all colors. Above all, if I may say so, it draws its excitement and vitality from deep and secret sources of health...One must admire black. Nothing can debauch it.”
― Odilon Redon
Odilon Redon, besides working with lithographs also liked experimenting with different drawing techniques. Above you can see an artwork created with crushed pastels. It really shows how Redon was stepping outside of his lithographic comfort zone in order to experience and show new sensations.
Overall, I find a person of Odilon Redon as a very inspiring one. I see him as a hard worker who actually worked for his success, while not being scared of feel of discomfort while stepping outside his comfort zone.
