Major Project TERM II - Final Artworks and Reflections

Below you can view all of the final artworks in their full glory. I have also added my reflections about all of this work at the end of the post.

I. Thoughts

II. Emotions

III. Dreams

IV. Ageing

V. Death

VI. Memories

I am satisfied with how most of these pieces turned out. After spending a lot of time researching other people's works, I was happy to finally do mine own creations. The editing process was definitely easier for me then in the last term, mainly because these images needed less editing, and I have improved greatly since then.
The 'Emotions' and 'Dreams' are definitely my favourite photographs. I really like the quality of the portraits in the first one and how the negative space is filled with the lines in the other one. 'Emotions' are probably by far the best, technically, photographs I have made. The exposure is perfect, as well as the balance between shadows and highlights. The character is separated from the background. These are truly fine photographs.
On the other hand, we have 'Memories' which I am not the biggest fan. There is something wrong but I cannot place a finger on it. Maybe it's the pose, maybe it looks to superficial, I do not know, but it does not look right to me. It was also the most difficult piece to edit with the number of layers. It still is a pretty well created image, but I feel like it is a level lower than the rest.
As for the rest of the photographs, I am quite proud of them. Especially, 'Thoughts' I think come out great. It is undeniably a long exposure portrait and it has its characteristics but I managed to balance the mixed random blurry trails with distinctive faces which are sharp and clear. As for the 'Ageing' I think that it would work better if I would have a good quality photograph from my past because the middle aged me, still looks very much like me now. With 'Death' I do not have many problems but also, I don't find this photograph amazing. It is difficult to do this kind of photography alone since I have to depend on the autofocus, which I do not like. Here however it worked out fine, with the dying me sharp and in focus in the foreground and the ghost me blurred in the background. What was also not ideal was that I do not know how, but I changed the ISO to auto, which caused the horrible 4000 ISO in the final image. Fortunately, my camera has big enough sensor that there was not too much noise in the photograph.
Another thing that is bothering me a bit is that this collection is not as cohesive as I would like it to be. Maybe it they all would be purely close up portraits it would make it more consistent and connected collection.
In conclusion, I am mostly proud of how these photographs turned out. Some of them not exactly how I imagined but because of that I was able to experiment a little which was also good for me. I think that as for the first time shooting in black and white, I also did a good job capturing different tones in my skin and clothing. I think that I will revisit black and white photography in the future since I think that getting rid of colours let me focus more on the composition and lighting which was good.

  1. Excellent work indeed - dreaming reminds me of work by Joan Fontcuberta. Love the aging image even if it is a little frightening but we all do have to face it! Very good experimental collection - impressive
