Yoko Ono - Reflections after lecture
Last week we had to watch a documentary about Yoko Ono, called The real Yoko Ono (2001), below you can see some reflections I had after watching it.
I was never really interested in Yoko Ono's art, I am also not the biggest fan of the Beatles, therefore I was not really aware of the relation between her and John Lennon. I had of course the basic understanding of people's opinions on her and her negative influence on the Beatles, but in general I was not biased towards any side.
I was somewhat disappointed that this documentary was not about her art, and was about her personal life. I am usually not that interested in artists' private life therefore this documentary was not as interesting to me as it could be. Nonetheless, it was curious to see how public just decided that Yoko Ono was the villain in the relation between her and John Lennon, and yet from I understood from this film was that the blame was on both sides.
As for the documentary itself I felt that during this almost hour-long film not a lot was said. The basic conclusion and side were set in first minutes and the rest of the film was pretty much only defending this side. It felt biased at times, which did not sit right with me. Also, as for the number of people that were interviewed, we did not receive that much information. A lot of it was constantly repeated, as if there was not enough material, which is hard to believe.
Overall, I would be much more inclined to watch a documentary about Yoko Ono's work since judging from a few shots of her exhibitions in the documentary, I think it would be much more interesting subject than this. I gained more respect for the Yoko Ono character throughout this documentary, prior to watching it the only thing I knew about her was that she 'broke up' the Beatles, so I was surprised to learn that it was not entirely true. Both her and Lennon were flawed people and public should know that.
